The Premiership leaders, who had defeated Fulham, Charlton Athletic, and Watford in their first three fixtures of the season, launched themselves into an early lead already in the ninth minute of the contest when a powerful long-distance free-kick from Cristiano Ronaldo was parried by Tottenham and Three Lions goalkeeper Paul Robinson and Ryan Giggs was there to head the rebound into the back of the net.
