Manchester United 3 FC Copenhagen, Old Trafford, UEFA Champions League Group Stage, October 17, 2006. 2005-06 Premiership runners-up Manchester United had few problems in beating Superliga Champions FC Copenhagen at home. United won the game 3-0 through a first half goal by Paul Scholes and second half goals from John O’Shea and Kieran Richardson.

The Lions, who had endured something of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale the previous season which had seen them winning the Danish Super League six points ahead of neighbouring rivals Brondby IF, never really stood a chance against Manchester United at The Theatre of Dreams. After starting their Champions League campaign with a 3-2 victory over Scottish Premier League Champions Celtic at Old Trafford, United had edged out Portuguese Premier Division giants Benfica by a 1-0 score at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon in their second group stage fixture and were overwhelming favourites to overcome the Danes at home. Manchester United, who were without defender Rio Ferdinand and winger Ryan Giggs because of injury and illness respectively, moved into the lead six minutes ahead of the interval when Paul Scholes hammered the ball past FC Copenhagen netminder Jesper Christiansen and into the goal from twenty-five yards out. And only a minute into the second period of the tie, John O’Shea doubled Manchester United’s advantage as the Republic of Ireland defender converted a well delivered corner by Cristiano Ronaldo. The Old Trafford outfit kept on dominating the game and the hosts had their third goal of the evening when Kieran Richardson powered home a long distance effort with seven minutes remaining of normal time, leaving FC Copenhagen as the ugly ducklings.
