After guiding Manchester United to a 5-1 win over Cardiff City at Cardiff City Stadium in his first outing as caretaker boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer led his men to another three points against Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford where a double from Paul Pogba and one goal by Nemanja Matic ensured a 3-1 triumph against the John Smith´s Stadium club.

Newly hired caretaker head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer received a warm welcome from the home crowd before the meeting with Huddersfield. Manchester United had soundly beaten Premier League newcomers Cardiff by 5-1 in their previous Premiership match four days earlier courtesy of a Jesse Lingard double and a goal each from Marcus Rashford, Ander Herrera, and Anthony Martial, and The Reds proved that the away win against The Bluebirds was no fluke as they earned themselves a comfortable 3-1 triumph over Hudds at Old Trafford. The Mancunians, who had not lost a home game on Boxing Day since 1978 when they suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool, went into the lead against David Wagner´s side thanks to a close range effort from defensive midfield man Nemanja Matic a couple of minutes before the half-hour mark. Portugal U21 international defender Diogo Dalot almost added a second goal for United some five minutes ahead of the break, but his try went wide of the upright. Following the half-time refreshments, Manchester United continued to dominate proceedings and French World Cup winner Paul Pogba stretched the advantage for the rampant home outfit when the suave midfielder found the target with a well placed shot which flew past Danish Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl and into the bottom left corner of the net in the 64th minute of the tie.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw came close to scoring four minutes later with a ferocious strike from outside the eighteen-yard area, but his effort was saved by Lossl. United kept on launching attacks and the hosts had their third goal of the afternoon as the omnipresent Pogba powered home another accurate shot in the 78th minute of the encounter before Denmark international Mathias Jorgensen managed to score a late consolation for the West Yorkshire team when he swept the ball past Old Trafford shot stopper David de Gea and into the net from a few yards out with just two minutes remaining of normal time. Not surprisingly, Paul Pogba was named Man of the Match after his outstanding Boxing Day performance against Huddersfield Town.
