Man­chester Uni­ted had de­feated Ox­ford Uni­ted 2-1 at Old Traf­ford in the pre­vi­ous ro­und thanks to two pen­alty goals from spot-kick ex­pert Ger­ry Da­ly, where­as Noel Cantwell´s Pe­ter­bor­ough Uni­ted had edged out Not­ting­ham For­est by 1-0 at Lon­don Road, wi­th ex-Notts Coun­ty fa­vour­ite Jon Nix­on scor­ing the win­ning goal for the ho­me si­de. The Fir­st Di­vi­sion club help­ed them­selves in­to an early 1-0 lead wi­th on­ly eight min­utes gone of the ga­me when Scot­tish in­ter­na­tion­al Al­ex For­syth un­leashed a power­ful shot which de­flec­ted off un­for­tu­nate Pe­ter­bor­ough de­fender Chris Turner’s shoulder and flew in­to the roof of the net. And just three min­utes la­ter in the con­test, North­ern Ire­land in­ter­na­tion­al Sam­my Mc­Ilroy made it 2-0 to Man­chester Uni­ted wi­th a clo­se ran­ge head­er from an ex­cel­lent cross by Gor­don Hill. John Cozens, who had be­en Cantwell´s fir­st sign­ing for Pe­ter­bor­ough, ma­naged to re­duce the de­fi­cit for The Posh on the ha­lf-hour ma­rk, but Hill took the the mat­ch bey­ond reach for the plucky vis­it­ors as the for­mer Mill­wall and Chica­go Sting flanker ham­mered a blis­ter­ing ef­fort from out­side the eight­een-yard area pa­st away shot stop­per Eric Steele and in­to the top right-hand cor­ner of the net wi­th some sev­en­teen min­utes re­maining of the fourth ro­und fix­ture at Old Trafford.

Else­where, Brad­ford City de­feated Toot­ing and Mitcham Uni­ted by 3-1 at Val­ley Parade, Lei­cester City emer­ged 1-0 win­ners over Bury at fil­bert Street, South­ampton won 3-1 ag­ainst Black­pool at The Dell, York City fell 2-0 to Chel­sea at Bootham Cres­cent, Der­by Coun­ty edged out Liver­pool by a 1-0 score at Base­ball Gro­und, Nor­wich City over­came Luton To­wn by 2-0 at Car­row Road, Leeds Uni­ted suf­fered a 1-0 de­feat ag­ainst Crys­tal Pal­ace at El­land Road, Cov­entry City and New­castle Uni­ted drew 1-1 at High­field Road, Hud­dersfield To­wn lost 1-0 ag­ainst Bol­ton Wan­derers at Leeds Road, Charl­ton Ath­let­ic were held to a 1-1 draw by Ports­mouth at The Val­ley, Luton To­wn suc­cumbed to a 2-0 loss at the hands of Nor­wich City at Car­row Road, New­castle Uni­ted ma­naged a 1-1 draw ag­ainst Cov­entry City at High­field Road, West Brom­wich Al­bion emer­ged 3-2 vic­tors ag­ainst Lin­coln City at the Haw­thorns, Car­diff City went down 2-1 to South­end Uni­ted at Roots Hall, and Ips­wich To­wn and Wolver­hampton Wan­derers played out a 0-0 draw at Port­man Road. Af­ter com­fort­ably de­feat­ing Pe­ter­bor­ough Uni­ted 3-1 at Old Traf­ford, Man­chester Uni­ted would now take on Lei­cester City at Fil­bert Street.
