Man­chester Uni­ted, who were chas­ing their sev­en­teenth cham­pi­on­ship title, were a goal up in the third min­ute of the tie when Por­tuguese flank­man Lu­is Nani ham­mered ho­me from thirty yards out, on­ly for for­mer Fran­ce U21 in­ter­na­tion­al wing­er Jeremie Ali­adiere to level the score for Gar­eth Southgate´s Middles­brough wi­th a well pla­ced head­er three min­utes la­ter. The Man­chester Uni­ted play­ers kept on push­ing for­ward and re­gained their lead as Stu­art Down­ing lost the ball to Nani who fou­nd Way­ne Roo­ney who­se fierce shot from in­side the pen­alty area went pa­st Middles­brough and Aus­tralia net­mind­er Ma­rk Schwar­zer and in­to the goal  in the 33rd min­ute of the clash. Fol­low­ing the re­start, The Reds Dev­ils in­creased their ad­vant­age in the 55th min­ute of ac­tion when Ar­gen­tina in­ter­na­tion­al stri­ker Car­los Tev­ez took a sub­lime back-heel pass from Roo­ney and power­ed the ball in­to the net from in­side the box. As the sec­ond ha­lf pro­gressed, Sir Al­ex Fer­guson made three sub­sti­tu­tions wi­th Dar­ren Fletch­er, Ger­ard Pique, and Ry­an Gig­gs com­ing on for Owen Har­greaves, Rio Fer­dinand, and Oli­veira An­der­son re­spect­ively. Wi­th the mat­ch ap­proach­ing the end, Tev­ez ul­ti­mately com­pleted his brace as the the sum­mer sign­ing from West Ham Uni­ted fou­nd the onion bag ag­ain wi­th an ef­fort which de­flec­ted off Boro de­fender An­drew Tay­lor en­route to the goal wi­th five min­utes re­maining of the con­test. Af­ter de­feat­ing Middles­brough by a 4-1 mar­gin at Old Traf­ford, Man­chester Uni­ted had now sco­red four goals in each of their pre­vi­ous four fix­tures.
