Manchester United hit back as fellow countryman Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took full advantage of a mistake by Nottingham Forest and Three Lions defender Stuart Pearce to put the ball into the net in the twenty-second minute of the clash before Ryan Giggs made it 2-1 to the home side two minutes ahead of the break. After the restart, Eric Cantona added a third goal for Manchester United on eighty-two minutes and the forward scored again when he converted from the penalty spot in the final minute of the tie.
