Norman Whiteside

Manchester United 4 Notts County 0, Old Trafford, English Football League First Division, December 11, 1982. Following a tough-fought 1-0 First Division triumph against Elton John´s Watford at Vicarage Road, Manchester United went on to defeat Notts County 4-0 before a 33,000 crowd at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Norman Whiteside, Frank Stapleton, Bryan Robson, and Mike Duxbury.

After avoiding relegation to Division Two at the end of the 1981-82 campaign, long serving Notts County gaffer Jimmy Sirrel had become general manager at the Meadow Lane club, with former Boston United and Mossley boss Howard Wilkinson taking over as head coach. Although Wilkinson´s Nott County had managed to edge out neighbouring rivals Nottingham Forest by 3-2 at a full-packed Meadow Lane in their previous First Division fixture, The Magpies stood no chance whatsoever against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Northern Ireland international Norman Whiteside had the ball in the net in the early stages of the game, but the goal was correctly ruled out for a foul on Notts County goalkeeper Raddy Avramovic, also known as The Laddy Raddy, by Kevin Moran. Anyway, Whiteside handed United the lead when he converted a header from Dutch midfielder Arnold Muhren in the 24th minute, and Frank Stapleton added a second goal as the Republic of Ireland striker nodded home a corner kick nine minutes into the second half. Manchester United continued to bombard the Notts County defence and the men in red shirts were rewarded when strong running midfield engine Bryan Robson headed a perfect cross from Muhren beyond the reach of Avramovic and into the net in the 56th minute of proceedings. And with only three minutes remaining of normal time, Mike Duxbury scored one of his rare goals for Manchester United as the full back ran on to a clever through pass from Norman Whiteside and chipped the ball over Avramovic to make the final score 4-0 to the hosts.
