Af­ter be­ing held to a sur­prise 0-0 draw by Foot­ball Con­fer­ence si­de Bur­ton Al­bion at Pirelli Sta­dium in the fir­st ga­me, Man­chester Uni­ted de­feated The Brew­ers 5-0 in the re­play at Old Traf­ford thanks to a Gi­useppe Ros­si double and a goal each from Louis Saha, Kier­an Richard­son, and Ry­an Giggs.

Man­chester Uni­ted raced in­to an early 1-0 lead thro­ugh French in­ter­na­tion­al stri­ker Louis Saha who con­ver­ted a de­cent cross from Kier­an Richard­son on sev­en min­utes, and the ho­me te­am doubled their ad­vant­age as Gi­useppe Ros­si be­at Bur­ton Al­bion goal­keeper Saul Deeney wi­th a head­er in the 22nd min­ute of play. Af­ter the in­ter­val, Richard­son ad­ded a third goal for Man­chester Uni­ted in the 52nd min­ute of the mat­ch be­fore goals from Ry­an Gig­gs and Ros­si in the 68th and 90th min­utes of the en­counter han­ded The Reds a com­pre­hens­ive 5-0 tri­umph over the East Stafford­shire club.
