Man Utd 0 Crystal Palace 1
Manchester United 0 Crystal Palace 1, Old Trafford, English Football League First Division, October 19, 1970. Manchester United, who were still managed by former player Wilf McGuinness, suffered their second defeat in a week as The Reds fell 1-0 against Bert Head´s Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
Manchester United had lost 3-2 to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux in their previous Division One fixture, whereas Crystal Palace had comfortably defeated Southampton 3-1 at Selhurst Park. The Glaziers were by no means to be taken lightly and with players of the likes of Alan Birchenall, Mel Blyth, Steve Kember, Tony Taylor, and Gerry Queen in their team, they were a match for anyone. And despite dominating possession and territory throughout the ninety minutes, Manchester United struggled immensely to find a way past a very stubborn and well-organised Crystal Palace defence. The winning goal of the game eventually came three minutes past the hour mark when Peter Wall found found Bobby Tambling whose shot from the edge of the area flew past Alex Stepney and into the net.
