Man Utd 2 Swindon Town 1
Swindon Town, who had knocked out Wolverhampton Wanderers and Queens Park Rangers to reach the third round of the League Cup, had a few chances early on, but The Robins were denied by Raimond van der Gouw in the Manchester United goal. Seven minutes into the second half, Peter Thorne levelled the score for Swindon, but Manchester United had the last word as Scholes found the target for the hosts with a low shot that went in off the left-hand post in the 72th minute of the tie.
