Swin­don To­wn, who had knock­ed out Wolver­hampton Wan­derers and Queens Park Ran­gers to reach the third ro­und of the Lea­gue Cup, had a few chances early on, but The Robins were denied by Rai­mond van der Gouw in the Man­chester Uni­ted goal. The Pre­mier Lea­gue te­am ul­ti­mately broke the de­fens­ive dead­lock in the 19th min­ute when Karel Pobor­sky re­ceived a thro­ugh ball from Paul Scho­les be­fore put­ting the ball pa­st Swin­don shot stop­per Frank Talia and in­to the bot­tom right cor­ner of the net. Sev­en min­utes in­to the sec­ond ha­lf, Pe­ter Thorne lev­elled the score for Swin­don, but Man­chester Uni­ted had the last word as Scho­les fou­nd the tar­get for the hosts wi­th a low shot that went in off the left-hand post in the 72th min­ute of the tie.
