Ruud van Nistel­rooy re­gistered four goals as Man­chester Uni­ted out­classed Czech Fir­st Lea­gue si­de Sparta Prague to the tune of a 4-1 score at Old Traf­ford. The Dutch­man net­ted in the 14th, 25th, 60th, and 90th min­utes of the mat­ch respectively.

Foun­ded on the 16th of Nov­ember 1893, Sparta Prague had be­en one of the most suc­cess­ful clubs in the Czech Re­pub­lic, win­ning an im­press­ive total of 32 do­mest­ic Lea­gue titles be­tween 1909 and 2003. Man­chester Uni­ted had be­en held to a goal­less draw by Frantisek Straka´s boys at the Toyota Arena in the re­verse fix­ture two weeks earli­er, but this ga­me turned out to be quite dif­fer­ent. Ruud van Nistel­rooy put Uni­ted ahead on four­teen min­utes af­ter a mis­take by the Sparta Prague de­fence and the Dutch for­ward ad­ded a sec­ond goal for the hosts just el­ev­en min­utes la­ter in the mat­ch when he con­ver­ted from the pen­alty spot fol­low­ing a foul on Paul Scho­les in­side the eight­een-yard area. For­mer Czech Re­pub­lic U21 in­ter­na­tion­al Lu­kas Zelen­ka re­duced the de­fi­cit for The Ma­roons eight min­utes in­to the sec­ond pe­riod, but two more goals from Van Nistel­rooy en­sured The Reds a vic­tory of 4-1.
