Manchester U 5 Newcastle 0
Manchester United 5 Newcastle United 0, Old Trafford, English Football League First Division, September 8, 1984. Manchester United gained their first victory of the 1984-85 season as they trashed Newcastle United 5-0 courtesy of a couple of goals from Scotland international Gordon Strachan and a goal each by Remi Moses, Jesper Olsen, and Mark Hughes.
Manchester United had drawn against Watford, Southampton, Ipswich Town, and Chelsea in their four opening fixtures of the season, whereas First Division newcomers Newcastle United had beaten Leicester City, Sheffield Wednesday, and Aston Villa, and suffered defeat against Arsenal. Manchester United had their opening goal when former Blyth Spartans defender Steve Carney lost the ball to Danish international winger Jesper Olsen who stormed into the eighteen-yard area and rounded away shot stopper Kevin Carr to put the ball into the empty net with just one minute remaining of the first frame. Three minutes after the half time break, the inspired home team were awarded a penalty following a somewhat heavy challenge from Newcastle right fullback Malcolm Brown on Arthur Albiston inside the box, and Scottish midfield terrier Gordon Strachan converted the subsequent spot kick to double the advantage for the hosts. And twelve minutes later, Northern Ireland international Norman Whiteside sent a fine through ball to Mark Hughes who calmly slotted the ball between the Newcastle custodian and the right post to make it 3-0 to Manchester United, and, on 72 minutes, The Reds had their fourth goal of the afternoon when a clever pass from Olsen was collected by the onrushing Remi Moses who outmanoeuvred the overworked goalkeeper to score. The Old Trafford club continued to attack, and Strachan completed his double in the 75th minute of play when he latched onto a long ball from Moses and found the net with a controlled finish to register the final goal of the contest.
