Man Utd 6 Northampton 2
Manchester United 6 Northampton Town 2, Old Trafford, English Football League First Division, February 5, 1966. Manchester United had no difficulties in defeating Northampton Town at home. The Old Trafford men ultimately hammered The Cobblers 6-2 through a hat-trick from Bobby Charlton and a brace by Denis Law, plus one goal from John Connelly.
Northampton Town, who had gone from the Division Four to Division One in just four years, proved to be no match for Manchester United. The United supporters screamed for a penalty-kick early on when John Connelly was brought down inside the eighteen-yard area, but the referee just waved play on. Matt Busby´s side took the lead anyway as Denis Law found the back of the net in the sixth minute before Conelly scored himself four minutes later to make it 2-0 to the hosts. Ex-Manchester United midfielder Graham Moore reduced the arrears for Northampton in the 22nd minute of the clash, but two quick goals from England striker Bobby Charlton in the 27th and 31st minutes respectively saw The Reds go into half-time with a 4-1 advantage. Manchester United continued their dominance following the resumption and The Law Man registered a fifth goal for the increasingly confident home team in the 46th minute of the second period. With the game winding down, Don Martin eventually netted a second consolation goal for Town after 75 minutes, only for Charlton to round off the scoring in the 84th minute. Despite the convincing victory over relegation battling Northampton, Manchester United nevertheless remained in third position, one point adrift of second placed Burnley and seven points behind leaders Liverpool.
