As the fir­st ha­lf un­fol­ded, Man­chester Uni­ted got them­selves in front in the 40th min­ute of the con­test when Ry­an Gig­gs ham­mered an un­stoppable free-kick pa­st New­castle shot stop­per Pavel Sr­nicek and in­to the top left cor­ner of the net. Fol­low­ing the re­sump­tion, Kev­in Keegan´s play­ers came a lot more in­to the ga­me and ma­naged to hit back as Andy Cole sco­red his fir­st Pre­mier Lea­gue goal wi­th a fine fin­ish to equal­ise for the vis­it­ing te­am on 70 min­utes. Wales in­ter­na­tion­al Ma­rk Huges came clo­se for Man­chester Uni­ted wi­th just three min­utes re­maining of nor­mal time, but the in­form for­ward was denied by an ex­cel­lent save from Sr­nicek.
