Manchester U 2 Leicester 2
Manchester United 2 Leicester City 2, Old Trafford, English Premier League August 15, 1998. Contrary to most predictions, Manchester United were held to a disappointing 2-2 draw against little fancied Leicester City. At Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson´s boys came from being two goals down to rescue a point in their opening game of the 1998-99 campaign.
Sir Alex Ferguson´s Manchester United First Team Squad for the 1998-99 season contained Nick Culkin, Peter Schmeichel, Raimond van der Gouw, Henning Berg, Wesley Brown, Michael Clegg, John Curtis, Danny Higginbotham, Denis Irwin, Ronny Johnsen, David May, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Jaap Stam, David Beckham, Jesper Blomqvist, Nicky Butt, Ryan Ford, Ryan Giggs, Jonathan Greening, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Paul Teather, Michael Twiss, Ronnie Wallwork, Mark Wilson, Andy Cole, Alex Notman, Teddy Sheringham, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Dwight Yorke. On the opening day of the Premiership campaign, Leicester City went in front in the seventh minute of the encounter when hard running midfielder Muzzy Izzet found England U21 international striker Emile Heskey who hammered home from inside the six-yard box. And with just fourteen minutes remaining of the clash, Martin O´Neill´s Leicester scored again as Muzzet fed the ball out to former Manchester United player Robbie Salvage whose cross was met by experienced striker Tony Cottee who headed past Denmark international Peter Schmeichel to give The Foxes a surprise 2-0 lead. But three minutes later, Teddy Sheringham, who had replaced Gary Neville in the 77th minute, found the target for Manchester United and the hosts finally had their equaliser thanks to a well placed David Beckham free-kick which flew past substitute goalkeeper Pegguy Arphexad and into the bottom left corner of the net in stoppage time.
