Manchester United had defeated Football League First Division side Portsmouth 4–1 at The Theatre of Dreams in the previous round, whereas Liverpool had beaten fellow Premier League club Manchester City 1-0 in what proved to be the final FA Cup fixture at Maine Road. The United supporters had barely found their seats before Liverpool went in front when nineteen-year-old marksman Michael Owen headed a brilliantly delivered cross from Norwegian defender Vegard Heggem past Denmark international shot stopper Peter Schmeichel and into the bottom left corner of the net in the third minute of the FA Cup match. As the scoreboard clock at Old Trafford ticked down, Manchester United finally had their equaliser when Andy Cole nodded the ball on to striking partner Dwigh York who found the target from close range with a couple of minutes left of normal time. And just a few moments later, none other than second half substitute Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hit the winner for the hosts with a low shot from inside the area during stoppage time.
