Manchester United had beaten Port Vale 2-1 at Vale Park in the first leg thanks to a brace from debutant Paul Scholes and the 1993-94 double winners had no problems in the return game in Manchester. The Reds dominated play from the outset and went in front thanks to Scottish striker Brian McClair who beat Port Vale goalkeeper Paul Musselwhite in the 35th minute of the League Cup encounter. Manchester United carried on dominating in the second period and former Blackburn Rovers defender David May netted the second goal of the evening after 61 minutes to seal a comfortable 2-0 home victory against Port Vale.
