Af­ter beat­ing Port Vale 2-1 away in the fir­st leg, The Reds de­feated The Vali­ants 2-0 at ho­me to pro­gress 4-1 on ag­greg­ate. Bri­an Mc­Clair sco­red the open­ing goal in the fir­st ha­lf be­fore Da­vid May ad­ded a sec­ond af­ter the interval.

Man­chester Uni­ted had beaten Port Vale 2-1 at Vale Park in the fir­st leg thanks to a brace from de­butant Paul Scho­les and the 1993-94 double win­ners had no prob­lems in the re­turn ga­me in Man­chester. The Reds dom­in­ated play from the out­set and went in front thanks to Scot­tish stri­ker Bri­an Mc­Clair who be­at Port Vale goal­keeper Paul Mus­sel­white in the 35th min­ute of the Lea­gue Cup en­counter. Man­chester Uni­ted car­ried on dom­in­at­ing in the sec­ond pe­riod and for­mer Black­burn Rov­ers de­fender Da­vid May net­ted the sec­ond goal of the even­ing af­ter 61 min­utes to seal a com­fort­able 2-0 ho­me vic­tory ag­ainst Port Vale.
