Man­chester Uni­ted 2 West Ham Uni­ted 3, Old Traf­ford Sta­dium, Eng­lish Foot­ball Lea­gue Fir­st Di­vi­sion, Au­gust 25, 1986. Fol­low­ing a 1-0 de­feat ag­ainst Ar­senal at High­bury on the open­ing Sat­urday of the 1986-87 cam­paign, Man­chester Uni­ted suf­fered a 3-2 loss to West Ham Uni­ted in front of a dis­ap­point­ing 43,000 crowd at Old Traf­ford just two days later. 

The East Lon­doners stormed in­to an early 1-0 lead as Frank McAven­nie ran onto a long ball and fired pa­st Man­chester Uni­ted goal­keeper Chris Turn­er and in­to the bot­tom left-hand cor­ner of net in the fir­st min­ute of the ga­me. The Old Traf­ford men push­ed for­ward for an equal­iser, but in­stead it was West Ham who went fur­ther in front thro­ugh a goal by Alan Devon­shire in the 39th min­ute be­fore Frank Stapleton ma­naged to re­duce the de­fi­cit for the hosts five min­utes ahead of the break. Man­chester Uni­ted star­ted the sec­ond ha­lf the bet­ter and, on 46 min­utes, Pe­ter Dav­en­port lev­elled the score for the ho­me si­de when the for­mer Not­ting­ham For­est ace con­ver­ted a cor­ner by Gor­don Stra­chan. The Reds con­tin­ued to dom­in­ate, but West Ham were dan­ger­ous on the counter-at­tacks and had the last word as McAven­nie head­ed a high pass over Turn­er and in­to the goal in the 82nd min­ute to make the fi­nal score 3-2 in fa­vour of The Irons. The res­ult meant that Man­chester Uni­ted now fou­nd them­selves in 21st place in the Di­vi­sion One ta­ble wi­th no points af­ter two rounds of ga­mes. West Ham, mean­while, were sit­ting top of the Fir­st Di­vi­sion wi­th a max­im­um six points, two points above Tot­ten­ham Hot­spur, Ever­ton, Man­chester City, Liver­pool, and Luton To­wn re­spect­ively.
