Manchester U 2 West Ham 3
Manchester United 2 West Ham United 3, Old Trafford Stadium, English Football League First Division, August 25, 1986. Following a 1-0 defeat against Arsenal at Highbury on the opening Saturday of the 1986-87 campaign, Manchester United suffered a 3-2 loss to West Ham United in front of a disappointing 43,000 crowd at Old Trafford just two days later.
The East Londoners stormed into an early 1-0 lead as Frank McAvennie ran onto a long ball and fired past Manchester United goalkeeper Chris Turner and into the bottom left-hand corner of net in the first minute of the game. The Old Trafford men pushed forward for an equaliser, but instead it was West Ham who went further in front through a goal by Alan Devonshire in the 39th minute before Frank Stapleton managed to reduce the deficit for the hosts five minutes ahead of the break. Manchester United started the second half the better and, on 46 minutes, Peter Davenport levelled the score for the home side when the former Nottingham Forest ace converted a corner by Gordon Strachan. The Reds continued to dominate, but West Ham were dangerous on the counter-attacks and had the last word as McAvennie headed a high pass over Turner and into the goal in the 82nd minute to make the final score 3-2 in favour of The Irons. The result meant that Manchester United now found themselves in 21st place in the Division One table with no points after two rounds of games. West Ham, meanwhile, were sitting top of the First Division with a maximum six points, two points above Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Luton Town respectively.
