Tommy Docherty´s troops had no real problems against Wilf McGuinness´s York City. Manchester United and Northern Ireland international playmaker Sammy McIlroy was a driving force in midfield in the game and was unlucky not to be on the scoresheet. After dominating from the start at Old Trafford, Manchester United finally got themselves into the lead in the 74th minute of the encounter when a free-kick from Scottish defender Alex Forsyth found fellow countryman Willie Morgan whose header went past York City goalkeeper Graeme Crawford and into the net. And twelve minute later, The Reds doubled their advantage through an effort from Lou Macari, also a Scotsman, before ex-Barnsley striker Jimmy Seal scored a late consolation goal for The Minstermen with two minutes to go.
