Lou Macari

Manchester United 3 Bolton Wanderers 0, Old Trafford, English Football League Second Division, September 25, 1974. Second Division leaders Manchester United defeated Bolton Wanderers 3-0 at home courtesy of a goal each from Lou Macari and Stewart Houston, plus an own goal by Don McAllister.

Second Division leaders Manchester United had comfortably beaten Bristol Rovers 2-0 at Old Trafford in their previous fixture, whereas lowly placed Bolton Wanderers had managed a creditable goalless draw against Sunderland at Roker Park. The Reds took the upper hand against The Trotters thanks to a volley from midfielder Lou Macari in the 40th minute of the midweek encounter and just two minutes later Stewart Houston scored one of his rare goals when the defender sent a pile diver of an effort past away goalkeeper Barry Siddal and into the back of the net. Bolton also had their moments, but the match was effectively put beyond their reach as Wanderers stopper Don McAllister sent the ball into his own onion bag five minutes past the hour mark.
