Man­chester Uni­ted entered the mat­ch ag­ainst Ips­wich To­wn on the back of a com­pre­hens­ive 3-0 tri­umph over Queens Park Ran­gers at Old Traf­ford, wi­th goals com­ing from for­ward Alan Brazil and de­fenders Mi­ke Dux­bury and John Gid­man. The Tract­or Boys, for their part, had suc­cumbed to a dis­ap­point­ing 2-0 de­feat at the hands of Sun­der­land at Port­man Road in their pre­vi­ous ga­me. Des­pite hav­ing plenty of good op­por­tun­it­ies early in the fir­st ha­lf, Ips­wich failed to score the open­ing goal and in­stead Scot­land in­ter­na­tion­al Gor­don Stra­chan han­ded Man­chester Uni­ted the lead from the pen­alty spot af­ter for­mer Ajax Am­s­ter­dam wing­er Jes­per Olsen had be­en blatantly tripped in­side the eight­een-yard area by vet­er­an shot stop­per Paul Cooper a min­ute pa­st the ha­lf-hour ma­rk. Three Li­ons mid­field play­maker Bry­an Rob­son then ad­ded a sec­ond goal for Man­chester Uni­ted eight min­utes in­to the sec­ond frame be­fore Gid­man made the fi­nal sco­reline 3-0 in the 86th min­ute of the en­counter.
