Manchester U 3 Ipswich 0
Manchester United 3 Ipswich Town 0, Old Trafford, English Football League First Division, December 22, 1984. Third positioned Manchester United demolished relegation threatened Ipswich Town by 3-0 on home soil courtesy of a goal apiece from Gordon Strachan, John Gidman, and Bryan Robson.
Manchester United entered the match against Ipswich Town on the back of a comprehensive 3-0 triumph over Queens Park Rangers at Old Trafford, with goals coming from forward Alan Brazil and defenders Mike Duxbury and John Gidman. The Tractor Boys, for their part, had succumbed to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Sunderland at Portman Road in their previous game. Despite having plenty of good opportunities early in the first half, Ipswich failed to score the opening goal and instead Scotland international Gordon Strachan handed Manchester United the lead from the penalty spot after former Ajax Amsterdam winger Jesper Olsen had been blatantly tripped inside the eighteen-yard area by veteran shot stopper Paul Cooper a minute past the half-hour mark. Three Lions midfield playmaker Bryan Robson then added a second goal for Manchester United eight minutes into the second frame before Gidman made the final scoreline 3-0 in the 86th minute of the encounter.
