Manchester United 3 Newcastle United 1, Old Trafford, English Football League First Division, September 21, 1968. After beating Waterford United 3-1 in a European Cup First Round First Leg game in Dublin three days earlier, Manchester United defeated Newcastle United by the identical scoreline in a First Division  fixture at Old Trafford. George Best hit a brace within just two minutes before Denis Law registered a third goal in the 28th minute.

Reigning European Champions Manchester United comfortably beat Newcastle United 3-1 in front of a 47,000 crowd at Old Trafford in what was Alan Duffy´s debut match for The Magpies. The Manchester Reds enjoyed plenty of scoring chances during the opening stages of the first period, but the hosts were a wee bit wasteful in front of goal. But as the half unfolded, George Best netted two quick goals in the 16th and 17th minutes respectively while Denis Law registered a third when the Scotland player unleashed a long-distance rocket shot which went past Northern Ireland custodian Iam McFaul and into the roof of the net in the 28th minute of the clash. Tommy Gibb recorded a consolation for Newcastle with twenty minutes remaining on the clock, but it was too late for the visiting side to get back into the contest. As for Duffy, the midfielder only made two First Division appearances for the St James´ Park club before he was transferred to Brighton and Hove Albion where he scored on his debut in a 2-1 Third Division victory against Bradford City at Goldstone Ground on 17th of January 1970.
