Fourth Division side Wrexham never really stood a chance against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Scottish international striker Brian McClair put the First Division club in front with a close range header in the 42nd minute of the match before Steve Bruce registered a second goal for the home team from the penalty spot two minutes later after Mark Hughes had been brought down inside the eighteen-yard box. And fourteen minutes into the second half of the tie, Gary Pallister added a third as the central defender hammered a powerful shot from just inside the area past Wrexham goalkeeper Mark Morris and into the net.
