Man­chester Uni­ted gain­ed their eighth Pre­miership ho­me win as they be­at Cov­entry City at Old Traf­ford. Dwight Yorke sco­red a brace in the fir­st ha­lf be­fore Ry­an Gig­gs and Paul Scho­les hit a goal each late in the sec­ond ha­lf to give Uni­ted a 4-2 win over The Sky Blues.

Cov­entry City went in front when John Hartson sco­red at the sec­ond at­tempt in the tenth min­ute af­ter Andy Goram could on­ly parry his fir­st ef­fort. Man­chester Uni­ted hit back when Trin­id­ad and To­bago in­ter­na­tion­al Dwight Yorke be­at Chris Kirk­land wi­th a power­ful shot from some twenty yards out af­ter twelve min­utes and the in­dus­tri­ous for­ward net­ted ag­ain in the twenty-sev­enth min­ute to give the hosts the lead for the fir­st time in the ga­me. The Mid­landers drew level ag­ain as Hartson head­ed ho­me a cross from Paul Telfer three min­utes pa­st the ha­lf-hour ma­rk, but late goals from Ry­an Gig­gs and Paul Scho­les in the eighty-fir­st and eighty-sev­enth min­utes saw Man­chester Uni­ted emerge 4-2 vic­tors.
