Dwight Yorke scored a brace in the first half before Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes hit a goal each late in the second half to give United a 4-2 win over The Sky Blues.
Coventry City went in front when John Hartson scored at the second attempt in the tenth minute after Andy Goram could only parry his first effort. Manchester United hit back when Trinidad and Tobago international Dwight Yorke beat Chris Kirkland with a powerful shot from some twenty yards out after twelve minutes and the industrious forward netted again in the twenty-seventh minute to give the hosts the lead for the first time in the game. The Midlanders drew level again as Hartson headed home a cross from Paul Telfer three minutes past the half-hour mark, but late goals from Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes in the eighty-first and eighty-seventh minutes saw Manchester United emerge 4-2 victors.
