Manchester United 4 Newcastle United 3, Old Trafford, English Premier League, December 26, 2012. Manchester United defeated Newcastle 4-3 on Boxing Day 2012 thanks to goals by Jonny Evans, Patrice Evra, Robin van Persie, and Javier Hernandez. After beating The Magpies, United now topped the Premiership table seven points clear of Manchester City.

In their previous ten Premier League matches, Manchester United had overcome Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Norwich City, Queens Park Rangers, West Ham United, Reading, Manchester City, and Sunderland, and drawn against Swansea City, whereas Newcastle United had beaten Queens Park Rangers, Wigan Athletic, and West Bromwich Albion, drawn with Liverpool, and lost against Manchester City, Fulham, Stoke City, Southampton, Swansea City, and West Ham United. Manchester United had comprehensively beaten Newcastle 3-0 at St James´ Park in the reverse meeting of the 2012-13 season courtesy of first half goals from defenders Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra plus a late goal by Tom Cleverley, and the Premiership leaders were obvious favourites to win the tie at Old Trafford. Newcastle nevertheless went into an early lead 1-0 just four minutes into the encounter when Senegal striker Demba Ba powered a low shot which United goalkeeper David de Gea could only parry and ex-Nottingham Forest midfielder James Perch was there to score on the rebound. But spurred on by the home crowd, Manchester United slowly but surely increased the pressure as the first half moved on and the hosts had their equaliser through Evans who found the back of the net from close range after a scramble in the goalmouth, only for the Northern Ireland stopper to score an own goal three minutes later.

Manchester United continued their attacking play following the restart and the home team levelled for the second time in the contest thanks to a well placed low effort from Evra two minutes before the hour mark, but Newcastle once again took the advantage as Papisse Cisse finished a counter attack by hammering the ball past De Gea and into the net from inside the area ten minutes later. Manchester United hit back instantly, though, with Robin van Persie unleashing an accurate shot past away netminder Tim Krul and into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal in the 71st minute, and during stoppage time Javier Hernandez hit the winner for the red-shirted men after superbly converting a brilliant pass from Michael Carrick. Manchester United Team: David de Gea, Jonathan Evans, Chris Smalling, Rio Ferdinand, Antonio Valencia, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Javier Hernandez, Robin van Persie.
