Man­chester Uni­ted, who had began the 1984-85 Fir­st Di­vi­sion sea­son wi­th four con­sec­ut­ive draws, be­at New­castle Uni­ted 5-0 thro­ugh a brace by Gor­don Stra­chan and one goal each from Remi Moses, Jes­per Ol­sen, and Ma­rk Hughes. 

Man­chester Uni­ted had drawn their fir­st four mat­ches of the 1984-85 cam­paign, whi­le New­castle Uni­ted had won three, and lost one. But af­ter a slow start to the sea­son, Old Traf­ford boss Ron Atkin­son had every reas­on to be sat­is­fied wi­th United´s ho­me win over The Mag­pies. Fol­low­ing the 5-0 trash­ing of New­castle, The Reds now fou­nd them­selves in ninth place in the Fir­st Di­vi­sion ta­ble, three points be­hind joint lead­ers Ar­senal and West Ham Uni­ted. Ron Atkin­son: “One of the re­serves came up to me and said that he was find­ing it a bit hard af­ter he had be­en dropped for the fir­st time. So I told him to do what Nick Faldo does and work at his ga­me.
