Manchester United 4 Bayer 2
Manchester United kicked off their Champions League campaign with a clash against Bayer Leverkusen who had enjoyed an excellent start to the 2013-14 season, and were sitting in third place in the German Bundesliga table. United entered the Tuesday fixture on the back of a moral boosting 2-0 victory over Premier League newcomers Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, while Sami Hyypia´s team had overcome Wolfsburg 3-1 at The Bay Arena in their previous game. As things turned out, Manchester United defeated Bayer Leverkusen by a margin of 4-2 in a match which saw England international Wayne Rooney score his 200th goal for The Reds. The English Premier League club dictated proceedings from the very beginning and eventually went into the lead after 22 minutes of the action thanks to a close range effort from Rooney. The Manchester United supporters received something of a scare a mere nine minutes into the second period, however, when Germany international midfield playmaker Simon Rolfes hammered a long distance shot past Old Trafford goaltender David de Gea to equalise for the visitors from North Rhine-Westphalia. Only five minutes later, though, United went ahead for the second time in the contest as South American wing back Antonio Valencia accurately crossed for the always dangerous Robin van Persie who managed to find the back of the net with an acrobatic try.
After 70 minutes of play, Wayne Rooney completed his brace when the free flowing centre forward latched on to a long punt and swept the ball over Bayer Leverkusen shot stopper Bernd Leno and into the goal. Then, on 79 minutes, Valencia finished a counterattack by powering the ball past Leno and into the net, before defender Omer Toprak scored a late goal for The Factory Squad with three minutes left of normal time.
