Man­chester Uni­ted kicked off their Cham­pi­ons Lea­gue cam­paign wi­th a clash ag­ainst Bay­er Lever­kusen who had en­joyed an ex­cel­lent start to the 2013-14 sea­son, and were sit­ting in third place in the Ger­man Bundes­liga ta­ble. Uni­ted entered the Tues­day fix­ture on the back of a mor­al boost­ing 2-0 vic­tory over Pre­mier Lea­gue new­comers Crys­tal Pal­ace at Old Traf­ford, whi­le Sami Hyypia´s te­am had over­come Wolfs­burg 3-1 at The Bay Arena in their pre­vi­ous ga­me. Af­ter 70 min­utes of play, Way­ne Roo­ney com­pleted his brace when the free flow­ing centre for­ward latched on to a long punt and swept the ball over Bay­er Lever­kusen shot stop­per Bernd Leno and in­to the goal. Then, on 79 min­utes, Va­lencia fin­ished a coun­ter­at­tack by power­ing the ball pa­st Leno and in­to the net, be­fore de­fender Omer To­prak sco­red a late goal for The Fact­ory Squad wi­th three min­utes left of nor­mal time.
