Man­chester Uni­ted suf­fered a shock ho­me de­feat ag­ainst York City in the fir­st leg of the sec­ond ro­und of the Lea­gue Cup. The Min­ster­men ev­entually over­came Uni­ted by 3-0 thanks to a brace from Paul Bar­nes and one goal by To­ny Barras. 

Sec­ond Di­vi­sion club York City caused a ma­jor up­set as they de­feated Man­chester Uni­ted 3-0 at Old Traf­ford on the 20th of Septem­ber 1995. Alan Little’s York took the ini­ti­at­ive from the be­gin­ning and the vis­it­ors were re­war­ded in the 24th min­ute of the tie when ver­sat­ile de­fender Graeme Murty set up Paul Bar­nes who­se de­flec­ted shot from over twenty-five yards out went pa­st Man­chester Uni­ted goal­keeper Kev­in Pilk­ing­ton and in­to the bot­tom right cor­ner of the net. Six min­utes in­to the sec­ond ha­lf, Bar­nes net­ted the sec­ond goal of the even­ing when he con­ver­ted from the spot af­ter the marks­man had be­en bro­ught down in­side the pen­alty area by North­ern Ire­land in­ter­na­tion­al Pat Mc­Gib­bon who was sub­sequently red carded by the mat­ch of­fi­cial. And just two min­utes la­ter, To­ny Bar­ras made the score 3-0 to the vis­it­ing out­fit as he head­ed ho­me a dan­ger­ous cross from ex­per­i­enced mid­fielder Nigel Pep­per.
