The Minstermen eventually overcame United by 3-0 thanks to a brace from Paul Barnes and one goal by Tony Barras.
Second Division club York City caused a major upset as they defeated Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford on the 20th of September 1995. Alan Little’s York took the initiative from the beginning and the visitors were rewarded in the 24th minute of the tie when versatile defender Graeme Murty set up Paul Barnes whose deflected shot from over twenty-five yards out went past Manchester United goalkeeper Kevin Pilkington and into the bottom right corner of the net. Six minutes into the second half, Barnes netted the second goal of the evening when he converted from the spot after the marksman had been brought down inside the penalty area by Northern Ireland international Pat McGibbon who was subsequently red carded by the match official. And just two minutes later, Tony Barras made the score 3-0 to the visiting outfit as he headed home a dangerous cross from experienced midfielder Nigel Pepper.
