Man­chester Uni­ted came from be­hind to edge out Ar­senal 2-1 at their Old Traf­ford ho­me cour­tesy of a goal each from Carlo Sar­tori and Wil­lie Mor­gan in the 45th and 48th min­utes respectively.

Man­chester Uni­ted, who were with­out the ser­vices of North­ern Ire­land in­ter­na­tion­al Geor­gie Best be­cause of sus­pen­sion, fou­nd them­selves one goal down in the 15th min­ute of the mat­ch when Scot­land U23 play­er Pe­ter Mar­inello sco­red from clo­se ran­ge af­ter an er­ror by Ian Ure. Man­chester Uni­ted had the ball in the net shortly af­ter­wards thro­ugh a fe­ro­cious free-kick from Bob­by Charl­ton, but the goal was dis­al­lowed for Bri­an Kidd be­ing mar­gin­ally off­side. As the fir­st ha­lf wore on, The Reds gradu­ally star­ted to dom­in­ate pos­ses­sion and ter­rit­ory and the ho­me si­de fi­nally had their equal­iser on the stroke of 45 min­utes as de­fender Fran­cis Burns de­livered a high free-kick in­to the pen­alty area where sub­sti­tute Carlo Sar­tori ma­naged to get the ball in­to the back of the net. Fol­low­ing the re­sump­tion of play, Man­chester Uni­ted car­ried on where they had left off be­fore the break wi­th Kidd set­ting up Scot­land flanker Wil­lie Mor­gan to net the win­ner three min­utes in­to the sec­ond pe­riod.
