Manchester United 2 Boro 3
Manchester United succumbed to their first home defeat of the 1998-99 campaign after losing 3-2 to Middlesbrough. Bryan Robson´s lads went in front thanks to a goal from Hamilton Ricard following 23 minutes before Dean Gordon doubled their lead a minute past the half-hour mark. After the resumption, former England international Brian Deane stretched Boro´s advantage further when the striker fired a low shot from outside the penalty box past home goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel and into the bottom left corner of the net fourteen minutes into the second half. Manchester United staged a late comeback as Nicky Butt and David Beckham replacement Paul Scholes grabbed a goal each in the 62nd and 70th minutes respectively, but with no more goals scored the visitors went on to pick up all three points.
