Bry­an Robson´s lads went in front thanks to a goal from Ham­ilton Ri­card fol­low­ing 23 min­utes be­fore Dean Gor­don doubled their lead a min­ute pa­st the ha­lf-hour ma­rk. Af­ter the re­sump­tion, for­mer Eng­land in­ter­na­tion­al Bri­an Deane stret­ched Boro´s ad­vant­age fur­ther when the stri­ker fired a low shot from out­side the pen­alty box pa­st ho­me goal­keeper Pe­ter Schmei­chel and in­to the bot­tom left cor­ner of the net four­teen min­utes in­to the sec­ond ha­lf. Man­chester Uni­ted staged a late come­back as Nicky Butt and Da­vid Beck­ham re­place­ment Paul Scho­les grabbed a goal each in the 62nd and 70th min­utes re­spect­ively, but wi­th no more goals sco­red the vis­it­ors went on to pick up all three points.
