Manchester United, who came fresh from a 2-1 away win against Ipswich Town, demolished Tommy Docherty´s Derby County 4-0 at home thanks to a first half brace by Gordon Hill and second period goals from Stuart Pearson and Martin Buchan.
Manchester United had beaten Everton, Leicester City, and Ipswich Town, and lost against Coventry City, and Birmingham City in their previous five First Division encounters, whereas Derby County had overcome Coventry City, drawn against Queens Park Rangers and Nottingham Forest, and been beaten by Aston Villa and Ipswich Town. At Old Trafford, Scotland international defender Martin Buchan scored of his rare goals for Manchester United as Dave Sexton´s side defeated The Rams by a comprehensive 4-0 margin. United rushed into the lead through an early close range goal by Gordon Hill in the sixth minute of the contest and the industrious flankman added a second when he coolly converted from the penalty spot two minutes before the half-hour mark. Stuart Pearson then netted a third goal for Manchester United in the 70th minute as he headed home a cross by Hill before Buchan unleashed an unstoppable effort past Derby shot stopper John Middleton and into the back of the net two minutes from time to make the final score 4-0 in favour of the hosts.
