Manchester United, who were sitting in second place in the table, demolished Stoke City 5-0 at home to gain their fourth First Division victory on the trot courtesy of a brace each from Mark Hughes and Jesper Olsen plus a single goal by Norman Whiteside.
Manchester United had beaten Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Leicester City in their three previous First Division fixtures, whereas Stoke City had overcome Arsenal and suffered defeats against Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa. Welsh international Mark Hughes put United in front in the fourth minute of the match while Danish winger Jesper Olsen netted a second goal three minutes before the half-hour mark to give the home team a 2-0 lead at the interval. Hughes then scored a third goal for Manchester United in the 65th minute of proceedings before Olsen added a fourth after 80 minutes of action. And with only one minute remaining of the one-sided game, Norman Whiteside rounded off the scoring spree when the nineteen-year-old Northern Ireland marksman outmaouvred Stoke City shot stopper Barry Siddall to make it 5-0 to The Reds.
