Man­chester Uni­ted re­gistered an im­port­ant and hard-fou­ght 2-0 tri­umph ag­ainst Fir­st Di­vi­sion lead­ers Liver­pool at Old Traf­ford thro­ugh a goal each from Ron­ald “Wyn” Dav­ies and Ted Mac­Dou­gall.

Re­leg­a­tion bat­tling Man­chester Uni­ted de­feated Fir­st Di­vi­sion North West rivals Liver­pool in front of a crowd of more than 54,000 spec­tat­ors at Old Traf­ford thanks to goals from new sign­ings Ted Mac­Dou­gall and Wyn Dav­ies. Wi­th on­ly two min­utes re­maining of the fir­st pe­riod of the con­test, Mc­Dou­gall power­ed a fierce shot which Liver­pool goal­keeper Ray Clem­ence failed to hold and the op­por­tun­ist­ic Dav­ies was there to score from the re­bound. Man­chester Uni­ted con­tin­ued to push for­ward fol­low­ing the in­ter­val and the ho­me si­de doubled their ad­vant­age as de­fender Tom­my O’Neil sent a pre­cise pass to Mc­Dou­gall who put the ball pa­st Clem­ence and in­to the back of the net nine min­utes in­to the sec­ond pe­riod. Mac­Dou­gall, who had pre­vi­ously be­en re­jec­ted by Liver­pool boss Bill Shankly, had be­en bro­ught to Man­chester Uni­ted from AFC Bourne­mouth by Frank O´Farrell for a trans­fer fee of £200,000 partly in­to the 1972-73 sea­son, but the front­man on­ly played eight­een Fir­st Di­vi­sion mat­ches for the club be­fore he was sold to West Ham Uni­ted for a fee of £130,000 the fol­low­ing year. He la­ter ap­peared for sev­er­al clubs, in­clud­ing Nor­wich City, South­ampton, Black­pool, and Poole To­wn.
