Manchester U 2 Liverpool 0
Manchester U 2 Liverpool 0, Old Trafford, English Football League First Division, November 11, 1972. Manchester United registered an important and hard-fought 2-0 triumph against First Division leaders Liverpool at Old Trafford through a goal each from Ronald “Wyn” Davies and Ted MacDougall.
Relegation battling Manchester United defeated First Division North West rivals Liverpool in front of a crowd of more than 54,000 spectators at Old Trafford thanks to goals from new signings Ted MacDougall and Wyn Davies. With only two minutes remaining of the first period of the contest, McDougall powered a fierce shot which Liverpool goalkeeper Ray Clemence failed to hold and the opportunistic Davies was there to score from the rebound. Manchester United continued to push forward following the interval and the home side doubled their advantage as defender Tommy O’Neil sent a precise pass to McDougall who put the ball past Clemence and into the back of the net nine minutes into the second period. MacDougall, who had previously been rejected by Liverpool boss Bill Shankly, had been brought to Manchester United from AFC Bournemouth by Frank O´Farrell for a transfer fee of £200,000 partly into the 1972-73 season, but the frontman only played eighteen First Division matches for the club before he was sold to West Ham United for a fee of £130,000 the following year. He later appeared for several clubs, including Norwich City, Southampton, Blackpool, and Poole Town.
