In their pre­vi­ous six Pre­mier Lea­gue fix­tures, Man­chester Uni­ted had de­feated Crys­tal Pal­ace 1-0, Ar­senal 2-1, Hull City 3-0, Sto­ke City 2-1, South­ampton 2-1, and Liver­pool 3-0, but they had their win­ning streak stopped fol­low­ing an ac­tion packed and hard fou­ght 1-1 draw ag­ainst Paul Lambert´s As­ton Vil­la at Vil­la Park. Louis van Gaal´s Pre­miership title chal­lengers ev­entually ma­naged to level the score thro­ugh a clo­se ran­ge head­er from Colom­bi­an at­tack­er Ra­damel Fal­cao eight min­utes af­ter the in­ter­val, and just twelve min­utes la­ter in the Pre­mier Lea­gue en­counter, Birm­ing­ham born As­ton Vil­la wing­er Gab­riel Ag­bon­lahor was giv­en his march­ing or­ders by ref­er­ee Lee Ma­son for a tough chal­lenge on for­mer Vil­la Park team­mate Ash­ley Young, but Man­chester Uni­ted failed to con­vert the ad­vant­age of hav­ing one more man on the field in­to any goals.
