De­fend­ing Pre­mier Lea­gue Cham­pi­ons Man­chester Uni­ted could on­ly man­age a draw 2-2 ag­ainst Premir­ship new­comers Car­diff City. Uni­ted went in­to the lead twice dur­ing the clash wi­th Malky Mackay´s si­de, but The Reds ul­ti­mately had to settle for a point.

Man­chester United´s 4-0 tri­umph ag­ainst Car­diff City at Old Traf­ford on the 1st of Mar­ch 1975 was the turn­ing point on their way to clinch­ing the Sec­ond Di­vi­sion Cham­pi­on­ship in 1974-75. Thirty-eight years la­ter, Uni­ted and City met ag­ain, but this time in the Pre­mier Lea­gue. Af­ter sev­en min­utes of ac­tion at The Carditt City Sta­dium, Way­ne Roo­ney ma­naged to pick up an early yel­low card for a tough chal­lenge on Car­diff mid­fielder Jor­don Mutch. Roo­ney nev­er­the­less re­deemed him­self as he gave Man­chester Uni­ted the lead eight min­utes la­ter, on­ly for Fra­zi­er Camp­bell to pro­duce an equal­iser for The Blue­birds shortly af­ter the ha­lf-hour ma­rk. Uni­ted ev­entually re­gained their ad­vant­age in the forty-fifth min­ute of the tie thanks to Pat­rice Ev­ra, but Car­diff hit back ag­ain when Kim Bo-Ky­ung made the score two-all dur­ing stop­page time.
