Manchester United 2 Swansea City 0, Old Trafford, English Premier League, May 6, 2012. Manchester United defeated Swansea City 2-0 at Old Trafford thanks to first half goals from Paul Scholes and Ashley Young. Manchester City were still topping the table, though, as they managed to win by the exact same score against Newcastle United at St James´ Park.

Manchester United entered the fixture on the back of a narrow 1-0 loss against neighbours Manchester City at Etihad Stadium, while Swansea City had drawn 4-4 to already relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers at Liberty Stadium in their previous Premier League encounter. Containing Manchester United at their Old Trafford fortress is beyond most football teams, and the plucky South Wales outfit could only throw a white coloured cloak in front of their goalmouth and hope for the best possible outcome. And as expected by most, Manchester United pressed from the very start of the game, and the hosts had their reward in the 28th minute of play when evergreen Paul Scholes redirected a side-footed shot from fellow midfielder Michael Carrick into the back of the net. And four minutes before the sound of the half time signal, Ashley Young scored the second goal of the afternoon as the quick thinking England winger followed up a rebound from a Wayne Rooney effort. United continued to dominate the possession of the ball after the resumption, but the red shirts were wasteful in front of goal. Rooney eventually received his first yellow card of the 2011-12 Premier League season for a late challenge on Swansea midfielder Leon Britton in the 71st minute, and although the frustrated striker was replaced by Bulgarian marksman Dimitar Berbatov with eleven minutes remaining, the substitution made no impact on the scoreboard. The result at Old Trafford meant that Manchester City still led the Premier League on goal difference from The Reds.
