Manchester United had earned themselves a 2–2 draw against West Ham United at Boleyn Ground in the first meeting on the 5th of January 2013 thanks to a goal each from Tom Cleverley and Robin van Persie in the 23rd and 91st minute of the tie respectively, and played hosts to The Hammers at Old Trafford in an FA Cup Third Round Replay eleven days later. Wayne Rooney registered the winning and only goal of the contest when the England man received a Javier Hernandez pass from inside the penalty box and slid the ball home after nine minutes of play. Eleven times FA Cup winners Manchester United came close to a second goal in the 28th minute of the match when a volley from Luis Nani was cleared off the line line by West Ham left fullback Dan Potts, and shortly afterwards Rooney put Upton Park netminder Jussi Jaaskelainen to the test with a dangerous long distance shot. With twelve minutes remaining on the watch, Manchester United were given a penalty by match official Phil Dowd after England U21 international defender Jordan Spence had handled the ball inside the eighteen-yard area, but Wayne Rooney managed to blast the subsequent spot kick over the crossbar.
