Man­chester Uni­ted had earned them­selves a 2–2 draw ag­ainst West Ham Uni­ted at Boleyn Gro­und in the fir­st meet­ing on the 5th of Jan­uary 2013 thanks to a goal each from Tom Clev­er­ley and Robin van Per­sie in the 23rd and 91st min­ute of the tie re­spect­ively, and played hosts to The Ham­mers at Old Traf­ford in an FA Cup Third Ro­und Re­play el­ev­en days la­ter. Way­ne Roo­ney re­gistered the win­ning and on­ly goal of the con­test when the Eng­land man re­ceived a Javi­er Her­nandez pass from in­side the pen­alty box and slid the ball ho­me af­ter nine min­utes of play. Wi­th twelve min­utes re­maining on the watch, Man­chester Uni­ted were giv­en a pen­alty by mat­ch of­fi­cial Phil Dowd af­ter Eng­land U21 in­ter­na­tion­al de­fender Jor­dan Spence had handled the ball in­side the eight­een-yard area, but Way­ne Roo­ney ma­naged to blast the sub­sequent spot kick over the cross­bar.
