Sir Alex Ferguson

Newcastle United 0 Manchester United 0, St James´ Park, English Premier League, April 19, 2011. Manchester United extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to seven points after drawing against Newcastle United at St James´ Park. Sir Alex Ferguson´s men did their utmost to find a way forward, but could not manage to break down the well organised Newcastle backline and the home team were well deserving of their point.

Newcastle United dominated possession in the first half, but Manchester United saw more of the ball after the half-time break. Although Sir Alex Ferguson’s side played their way into the game and enjoyed the best goal scoring opportunities in the second period, they were not able to find the back of the net. Wayne Rooney came close to finding the goal for Manchester United already in the 19th minute of the encounter when his powerful shot was deflected over by Newcastle custodian Tim Krul, and Ryan Giggs had another glorious scoring opportunity following 69 minutes of action, but the midfield playmaker managed to put his effort wide. Javier Hernandez showed some of his thespian qualities when the Mexico international went down in the penalty area in stoppage time, and the striker was rightly booked by referee Lee Probert for diving. All in all, a goalless draw was the only logical result, and both clubs deserved at least a point. Following the draw with Newcastle, Manchester United now had 70 points from 33 matches, seven points above fellow title contenders Arsenal.
