Man­chester Uni­ted had no prob­lems in beat­ing Wi­gan who had lost each of their pre­vi­ous el­ev­en Pre­miership meet­ings wi­th The Reds. Uni­ted ul­ti­mately won the mat­ch 4-0 thanks to a brace by Chi­charito and a goal each from Way­ne Roo­ney and Fa­bio da Silva. 

In their last Pre­mier Lea­gue fix­ture, Sir Al­ex Ferguson’s men had de­feated Rob­erto Mancini´s Man­chester City si­de 2–1 at Old Traf­ford thanks to a bril­liant over­head kick from Way­ne Roo­ney in the 78th min­ute of the en­counter. Wi­gan Ath­let­ic, mean­while, had ma­naged a 1-1 draw ag­ainst Liver­pool at An­field thro­ugh a sec­ond ha­lf equal­iser from Ste­ve Go­houri. Oman in­ter­na­tion­al Ali Al Hab­si re­turned to ac­tion for Wi­gan af­ter be­ing in­eligible to face Bol­ton Wan­derers the week be­fore, whi­le Uni­ted were with­out Oli­veira An­der­son, Owen Har­greaves, Ji-sung Park, and An­tonio Va­lencia who were all out side­lined wi­th long term in­jur­ies. Man­chester Uni­ted got them­selves in­to the lead when Javi­er Her­nandez con­ver­ted a cross from Lu­is Nani af­ter 17 min­utes of ac­tion and the stri­ker ad­ded a sec­ond goal for the vis­it­ing te­am as he slot­ted ho­me in the 74th min­ute of the clash. And wi­th on­ly six min­utes left of the tie, Roo­ney made it 3-0 to Uni­ted be­fore Fa­bio da Silva sco­red the last goal of the ga­me just three min­utes la­ter to make the fi­nal score 4-0 in fa­vour of the vis­it­ors.
