Manchester United had no problems in beating Wigan who had lost each of their previous eleven Premiership meetings with The Reds. United ultimately won the match 4-0 thanks to a brace by Chicharito and a goal each from Wayne Rooney and Fabio da Silva.
In their last Premier League fixture, Sir Alex Ferguson’s men had defeated Roberto Mancini´s Manchester City side 2–1 at Old Trafford thanks to a brilliant overhead kick from Wayne Rooney in the 78th minute of the encounter. Wigan Athletic, meanwhile, had managed a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield through a second half equaliser from Steve Gohouri. Oman international Ali Al Habsi returned to action for Wigan after being ineligible to face Bolton Wanderers the week before, while United were without Oliveira Anderson, Owen Hargreaves, Ji-sung Park, and Antonio Valencia who were all out sidelined with long term injuries. Manchester United got themselves into the lead when Javier Hernandez converted a cross from Luis Nani after 17 minutes of action and the striker added a second goal for the visiting team as he slotted home in the 74th minute of the clash. And with only six minutes left of the tie, Rooney made it 3-0 to United before Fabio da Silva scored the last goal of the game just three minutes later to make the final score 4-0 in favour of the visitors.
