Manchester U 2 Arsenal 1

Patrice Evra

Manchester United 2 Arsenal 1, Old Trafford, English Premier League, November 3, 2012. Manchester United edged out Arsenal by 2-1 at Old Trafford courtesy of goals from former Emirates Stadium marksman Robin van Persie and French left fullback Patrice Evra. Sir Alex Ferguson´s men dominated the possession of the ball throughout the encounter and could have won by a much larger margin.

The final scoreline belied the true nature of the contest as the confident Manchester United players controlled proceedings from the first whistle. In the third minute of the action, summer signing Robin van Persie netted the opener against his former teammates when the trigger happy central attacker hammered home to record his tenth goal for the Old Trafford outfit. Then, after some thirty minutes of action, Spanish international Santi Carzola clearly stopped a ball from Manchester United and Three Lions flanker Ashley Young with his hands inside the eighteen-yard area and match official Mike Dean correctly awarded the home team a penalty. Wayne Rooney stepped up to execute the spot kick, but his somewhat weak effort hit the wrong side of the goalpost. After the half time refreshments, Manchester United went further ahead in the fixture as the persistent Rooney beautifully crossed for offensive thinking left fullback Patrice Evra who accurately headed the ball past a completely helpless Vito Mannone in the Arsenal goal and into the back of the net in the 67th minute of the clash. To make matters even worse for the North London club, England international Jack Wilshere received his second yellow card of the afternoon only two minutes later. Santi Carzola redeemed himself when the midfielder scored a consolation goal for Arsenal during stoppage time, but it was too late for The Gunners.
