Manchester United 4 Charlton Athletic 0, Old Trafford, English Premier League , May 7, 2006. Manchester United outclassed Charlton Athletic by 4-0 in their final Premiership fixture of the 2005-06 campaign. The win against the South East Londoners sealed second place in the Premier League, and with it automatic qualification into the Champions League.
Manchester United, who had not been beaten by Charlton Athletic at home since the 30th of August 1986, got off to a blistering start and were two goals up within the first twenty-three minutes. French striker Louis Saha opened the scoring for the hosts when he headed home a well delivered flag-kick from Ryan Giggs in the nineteenth minute of the game, and Portugal international Cristiano Ronaldo followed up by adding a second goal as the marksman tapped home from close range four minutes later. On a rather bleak afternoon for Charlton, Manchester United went into a comfortable 3-0 lead thanks to an own goal from midfielder Jason Euell ten minutes ahead of the half-time break, and to make things even worse for The Addicks, Kieran Richardson went on to score with a ferocious strike in the fifty-eighth minute of the clash to make the final scoreline read 4-0 in favour of the home side. The victory against Charlton meant that Manchester United finished the season as runners-up with eighty-three points gained from thirty-eight matches played, eight points behind champions Chelsea.
