Man­chester Uni­ted out­classed Charl­ton Ath­let­ic by 4-0 in their fi­nal Pre­miership fix­ture of the 2005-06 cam­paign. The win ag­ainst the So­uth East Lon­doners sealed sec­ond place in the Pre­mier Lea­gue, and wi­th it auto­mat­ic qual­i­fic­a­tion in­to the Cham­pi­ons League.

Man­chester Uni­ted, who had not be­en beaten by Charl­ton Ath­let­ic at ho­me since the 30th of Au­gust 1986, got off to a blis­ter­ing start and were two goals up with­in the fir­st twenty-three min­utes. French stri­ker Louis Saha opened the scor­ing for the hosts when he head­ed ho­me a well de­livered flag-kick from Ry­an Gig­gs in the nine­teenth min­ute of the ga­me, and Por­tugal in­ter­na­tion­al Cris­ti­ano Ron­aldo fol­lowed up by adding a sec­ond goal as the marks­man tap­ped ho­me from clo­se ran­ge four min­utes la­ter. On a rather bleak af­ter­noon for Charl­ton, Man­chester Uni­ted went in­to a com­fort­able 3-0 lead thanks to an own goal from mid­fielder Ja­son Eu­ell ten min­utes ahead of the ha­lf-time break, and to make things even worse for The Ad­dicks, Kier­an Richard­son went on to score wi­th a fe­ro­cious strike in the fifty-eighth min­ute of the clash to make the fi­nal sco­reline read 4-0 in fa­vour of the ho­me si­de. The vic­tory ag­ainst Charl­ton meant that Man­chester Uni­ted fin­ished the sea­son as run­ners-up wi­th eighty-three points gain­ed from thirty-eight mat­ches played, eight points be­hind cham­pi­ons Chel­sea.
