Des­pite be­ing down to ten men for most of the mat­ch, Man­chester Uni­ted ma­naged to knock Man­chester City out of the FA Cup. A brace by Ruud van Nistel­rooy and a goal each from Paul Scho­les and Ron­aldo re­spect­ively saw Uni­ted run­ning out 4-2 winners.

The Man­chester Der­by has al­ways be­en an ex­plos­ive af­fair and this mat­ch cer­tainly lived up to its billing. In front of a 67,000 crowd, Paul Scho­les gave Man­chester Uni­ted the up­per hand when the mid­field work­horse net­ted wi­th a clo­se ran­ge fin­ish in the 34th min­ute of the con­test. A mere five min­utes be­fore the ha­lf-time sig­nal, how­ever, Three Li­ons de­fender Ga­ry Ne­ville was right­fully han­ded his march­ing or­ders by mat­ch of­fi­cial Jeff Winter for an as­sault on Man­chester City mid­fielder Ste­ve Mc­Man­a­man. Fol­low­ing the ha­lf-time break, The Man­chester Reds doubled their ad­vant­age when an ex­cel­lent cross from Cris­ti­ano Ron­aldo was con­ver­ted at the far post by Dutch marks­man Ruud van Nistel­rooy on 71 min­utes be­fore the pro­vider re­gistered the third goal of the af­ter­noon as he fol­lowed up a shot from Ry­an Gig­gs and bur­ied the re­bound in­to the back of the net in the 74th min­ute of the FA Cup Fifth Ro­und fix­ture. Then, af­ter 78 min­utes of fierce ac­tion, Ger­man de­fender Mi­chael Tar­nat ham­mered ho­me for The Light Blues, on­ly for the al­ways dan­ger­ous Van Nistel­rooy to re­store Man­chester United´s three goal lead two min­utes la­ter. There was more to come, tho­ugh, as ex-Liver­pool for­ward Rob­bie Fowl­er pulled an­oth­er goal back for City wi­th four min­utes left on the ref­er­ees watch, but Uni­ted held on to emerge vic­tori­ous in the end.
