United went ahead courtesy of a well executed penalty kick from Louis Saha after Wayne Rooney had been tripped inside the eighteen-yard box by Portsmouth and Federal Republic of Serbia and Montenegro defender Dejan Stefanovic already in the third minute of the tie. Madeiran magician Cristiano Ronaldo then scored the second goal of the afternoon with an amazing free-kick after ten minutes of action before former Red Star Belgrade and Spartak Moscow centre back Nemanja Vidic headed home a precise cross from attack minded defender Gary Neville in the sixty-sixth minute of the encounter.
