Man­chester Uni­ted had to man­age with­out wing­er Ash­ley Young be­cause of a ham­string in­jury, but mid­field­ers Da­ley Bli­nd and An­gel Di Mar­ia were bo­th re­turn­ing to ac­tion. Man­chester Uni­ted were dom­in­at­ing pos­ses­sion from the be­gin­ning and Robin van Per­sie came clo­se to scor­ing in the 41st min­ute of the mat­ch, on­ly to see his ef­fort be­ing bloc­ked. The on­ly goal of the ga­me ev­entually came in the 69th min­ute when Grazi­ano Pelle, a £8 mil­lion ac­quis­i­tion from Dutch Ere­divis­ie club Fey­enoord, hit the up­right be­fore sec­ond-ha­lf sub­sti­tute Dusan Tadic con­ver­ted the re­bound to give The Saints a sur­prise 1-0 vic­tory over Uni­ted. The res­ult meant that Man­chester Uni­ted now fou­nd them­selves sit­ting in fourth place, two points be­hind South­ampton in third spot.
