Manchester United had to manage without winger Ashley Young because of a hamstring injury, but midfielders Daley Blind and Angel Di Maria were both returning to action. Manchester United were dominating possession from the beginning and Robin van Persie came close to scoring in the 41st minute of the match, only to see his effort being blocked. The only goal of the game eventually came in the 69th minute when Graziano Pelle, a £8 million acquisition from Dutch Eredivisie club Feyenoord, hit the upright before second-half substitute Dusan Tadic converted the rebound to give The Saints a surprise 1-0 victory over United. The result meant that Manchester United now found themselves sitting in fourth place, two points behind Southampton in third spot.
