Man­chester Uni­ted and Nor­wich City can­celled each oth­er out in the fir­st ha­lf of the tie and the score re­mained goal­less at the in­ter­val. Uni­ted push­ed hard for a goal af­ter the re­start and the re­vital­ised ho­me si­de fi­nally had their win­ner in the sev­enty-third min­ute of the clash as Stu­art Pear­son fou­nd the tar­get from the edge of the six-yard area af­ter away goal­keeper Kev­in Keelan had failed to hold a shot from Ste­ve Cop­pell. The nar­row win ag­ainst Nor­wich lif­ted Man­chester Uni­ted one place up to fif­teenth on four­teen points from fif­teen ga­mes, five points above the drop zone. At the oth­er end of the ta­ble, new­ly pro­moted Not­ting­ham For­est re­mained top wi­th twenty-four points from six­teen mat­ches des­pite a one-nil loss to Leeds Uni­ted at El­land Road.
