Man­chester Uni­ted had suf­fered a sur­prise 3-1 de­feat at the hands of Not­ting­ham For­est at City Gro­und in their pre­vi­ous Di­vi­sion One fix­ture, whi­le To­ny Waddington´s Sto­ke City had beaten FA Cup hold­ers Tot­ten­ham Hot­spur 2-1 at Vic­tor­ia Gro­und. The Pot­ters had come to Old Traf­ford to de­fend and the frus­trated ho­me sup­port­ers had to wait un­til the 75th min­ute for the break­through when Bob­by Charl­ton sco­red on a re­bound af­ter away goal­keeper Gor­don Banks had failed to hold a fe­ro­cious shot from North­ern Ire­land in­ter­na­tion­al Ge­orge Best. The Reds were nev­er really threat­ened af­ter that and the hosts saw out the mat­ch to claim a nar­row, but well de­served, win.
