The ver­sat­ile John Fitz­patrick en­joyed a great ga­me in mid­field for Man­chester Uni­ted ag­ainst Burn­ley, dic­tat­ing pro­ceed­ings from the middle of the park. Also put­ting in an im­press­ive per­form­ance was Geor­gie Best who was presen­ted wi­th his Euro­pean Play­er of the Year trophy from Fran­ce Foot­ball ed­it­or Max Urbini ahead of the meet­ing wi­th The Clarets. Fol­low­ing a goal­less fir­st ha­lf, Man­chester Uni­ted, who were with­out Bob­by Charl­ton and Da­vid Sad­ler be­cause of in­jur­ies, launched them­selves in­to the lead when Best con­ver­ted a mag­ni­fi­cent pass from mid­field en­for­cer Pad­dy Cre­rand el­ev­en min­utes in­to the sec­ond pe­riod. Uni­ted now con­trolled the mat­ch com­pletely and the ho­me te­am had their sec­ond goal of the af­ter­noon when for­mer Bury and Chel­sea de­fender Co­lin Wal­dron ma­naged to put the ball pa­st his own goal­keeper and in­to the net in the 59th min­ute of the tie.
