The mat­ch in Birm­ing­ham had hardly star­ted be­fore Man­chester Uni­ted and Eng­land for­ward Way­ne Roo­ney power­ed a fe­ro­cious shot from out­side the pen­alty area pa­st Wat­ford net­mind­er Rich­ard Lee and in­to the goal wi­th just six min­utes gone of the fir­st ha­lf. The Vicar­age Road club fou­ght back, tho­ugh, and Aidy Boothroyd´s te­am had their equal­iser thanks to a spec­tac­u­lar over­head-kick by Al­geri­an wing­er Hameur Bou­azza in the 26th min­ute of the out­ing, on­ly for Uni­ted to re­gain their lead when Cris­ti­ano Ron­aldo con­ver­ted a cross from Roo­ney two min­utes la­ter. Af­ter the re­sump­tion, Man­chester Uni­ted in­creased their ad­vant­age fur­ther as Waz­za fou­nd the net from clo­se ran­ge six min­utes pa­st the hour ma­rk, whi­le Kier­an Richard­son sco­red the fi­nal goal of the day in the 82nd min­ute of the semi-fi­nal clash. Fol­low­ing the vic­tory over Wat­ford at Vil­la Park, Uni­ted would now meet Chel­sea in the fi­nal at Wemb­ley.
