Man­chester Uni­ted knock­ed West Ham Uni­ted out of the FA Cup af­ter beat­ing The Irons 6-0 at ho­me. Ry­an Gig­gs and Ruud van Nistel­rooy net­ted a brace each, whi­le Phil Ne­ville and Ole Gun­nar Sol­skjaer also ad­ded their names to the scor­ing sheet. 

Man­chester Uni­ted had seen off the chal­lenge of Ports­mouth in the pre­vi­ous ro­und, where­as West Ham Uni­ted had elim­in­ated Not­ting­ham For­est. Welsh in­ter­na­tion­al Ry­an Gig­gs opened the scor­ing ac­count for The Reds af­ter eight min­utes when a clear­ance from West Ham de­fender Ian Pe­arce went straight to the twenty-nine-year-old flank for­ward who slot­ted the ball in­to the goal from just out­side the six-yard area. And a min­ute be­fore the ha­lf-hour ma­rk, Man­chester Uni­ted doubled their ad­vant­age as Gig­gs re­ceived the ball from ver­sat­ile mid­fielder Ju­an Se­basti­an Ver­on be­fore power­ing a shot which took a de­flec­tion off Re­pub­lic of Ire­land in­ter­na­tion­al Ga­ry Breen and flew over be­wildered away goal­keeper Da­vid Ja­mes. Fol­low­ing the in­ter­val, Uni­ted began where they left off in the fir­st ha­lf and the men in red shirts stret­ched their lead fur­ther four min­utes in­to the sec­ond pe­riod when Dutch stri­ker Ruud van Nistel­rooy ham­mered ho­me to make it 3-0 to the hosts, whi­le Three Li­ons play­er Phil Ne­ville re­gistered the fourth goal of the mat­ch one min­ute la­ter. Van Nistel­rooy then hit the fifth in the 58th min­ute, be­fore Da­vid Beck­ham re­place­ment Ole Gun­nar Sol­skjaer roun­ded off the scor­ing wi­th a mag­ni­fi­cent fin­ish af­ter 69 min­utes of one-sided play.
