Man­chester Uni­ted suf­fered their fifth con­sec­ut­ive away de­feat as they went down 2-1 ag­ainst Ron Greenwood´s West Ham Uni­ted in front of a 34,000 crowd at Up­ton Park in East Lon­don. Billy Bonds and Pat Hol­land net­ted the goals for The Irons, whi­le Sam­my Mc­Ilroy sco­red for the visitors.

Tom­my Docherty´s prob­lems grew as his mil­lion pound si­de suc­cumbed to a 2-1 away de­feat at the hands of West Ham Uni­ted. Man­chester Uni­ted, who came in­to the Fir­st Di­vi­sion fix­ture on the back of a nar­row 1-0 FA Cup Third Ro­und tri­umph ag­ainst Third Di­vi­sion club Ply­mouth Argyle at Old Traf­ford, pro­duced plenty of de­cent goal scor­ing op­por­tun­it­ies dur­ing the fir­st pe­riod of the tie, but the vis­it­ing te­am failed to ex­ploit them. The East Lon­doners star­ted the sec­ond pe­riod the bet­ter and the hosts went ahead early in the ha­lf thanks to Billy Bonds who be­at Man­chester Uni­ted goal­keeper Al­ex Step­ney wi­th a power­ful low shot from just out­side the pen­alty area. The Reds lev­elled the score when sub­sti­tute Sam­my Mc­Ilroy ma­naged to find the back of the net in the sixty-sev­enth min­ute of the clash, but The Ham­mers had their win­ner as Pat Hol­land head­ed ho­me wi­th less than five min­utes left of nor­mal time. The res­ult at Boleyn Gro­und meant that West Ham went two places up to nine­teenth in the Di­vi­sion One stand­ings, whi­le Man­chester Uni­ted slipped down to next to bot­tom.
